  • Mike: That's my new catchphrase: Coupl'a weirdos, Guinevere.
  • Mike: Just two spaced-out hippies, all jamming in the front seat, sipping on colas.
  • Andy: Dude, so-called NORMALS are the weirdos.
  • Mike: That's great, why don't you write that on the rim of the Invader Zim patch you're about to iron onto your Mindless Self Indulgence hoodie.
  • Mike: BOOM, ROASTED.

For Darnielle, the God-less practice of religion is indispensable. He maintains a lifelong cultural connection to Catholicism, and prays the Rosary. But he forgoes dogmatic adherence to any set of rituals, focusing instead on the transcendent power of all things devotional. “I love going to Hare Krishna temples to chant,” he says. “I don’t really believe in it, but I believe in praying.” He pauses and exhales softly before continuing. “I believe in the spirit of prayer, and the process, and finding some way of acknowledging my own smallness in the infinite. So I still behave religiously, faith or no faith. I think it’s a good thing, and I enjoy it. But I think you need to engage beyond technical exercises.”

The record’s closing track draws its title and narrative from the seventh chapter of Ezekiel, an Old Testament vision of the end of the world. Amidst that fire and brimstone, Darnielle finds redemption in the hard-won Biblical lessons. “There are plenty of people in the Bible who do things for which they shouldn’t be forgiven unless they beg, and they don’t,” he says. “Yet grace, divine or otherwise, absolves the most monstrous sins. If there is grace.

Paste: Confess With Thy Mouth: Mountain Goats Frontman Grapples With Faith

The feature I wrote on John Darnielle about his new LP The Life of the World to Come for the November issue of Paste. This was probably one of the best interviews I’ve ever done.

Implementing the McChrystal plan will perpetuate the longstanding fundamentals of US national security policy: maintaining a global military presence, configuring US forces for global power projection, and employing those forces to intervene on a global basis. The McChrystal plan modestly updates these fundamentals to account for the lessons of 9/11 and Iraq, cultural awareness and sensitivity nudging aside advanced technology as the signature of American military power, for example. Yet at its core, the McChrystal plan aims to avert change. Its purpose - despite 9/11 and despite the failures of Iraq - is to preserve the status quo.

As the fighting drags on from one year to the next, the engagement of US forces in armed nation-building projects in distant lands will become the new normalcy. Americans of all ages will come to accept war as a perpetual condition, as young Americans already do. That “keeping Americans safe’’ obliges the United States to seek, maintain, and exploit unambiguous military supremacy will become utterly uncontroversial.

Boston Globe: Afghanistan - the proxy war

Fantastic op-ed by Andrew Bacevich about what’s at stake in the Afghanistan debate, well worth a read.

Paul Craig Roberts: Another War in the Works

As there is no real case against Iran, Obama took a script from Bush’s playbook and fabricated one. First the facts: As a signatory to the non-proliferation treaty, Iran’s nuclear facilities are open to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency, which carefully monitors Iran’s nuclear energy program to make certain that no material is diverted to nuclear weapons.
The IAEA has monitored Iran’s nuclear energy program and has announced repeatedly that it has found no diversion of nuclear material to a weapons program. All 16 US intelligence agencies have affirmed and reaffirmed that Iran abandoned interest in nuclear weapons years ago.
In keeping with the safeguard agreement that the IAEA be informed before an enrichment facility comes online, Iran informed the IAEA on September 21 that it had a new nuclear facility under construction. By informing the IAEA, Iran fulfilled its obligations under the safeguards agreement. The IAEA will inspect the facility and monitor the nuclear material produced to make sure it is not diverted to a weapons program.
Under the safeguards agreement that Iran has with the IAEA, a nuclear facility is not secret unless Iran completes and operates the facility without informing the IAEA.
By accusing Iran of having a secret “nuclear weapons program” and demanding that Iran “come clean” about the nonexistent program, adding that he does not rule out a military attack on Iran, Obama mimics the discredited Bush regime’s use of nonexistent Iraqi “weapons of mass destruction” to set up Iraq for invasion.

More excellent work from PCR. Another thing to keep in mind: American foreign policy apparachiks make great hay about how Iran is a fundamentalist Shi’a Muslim state (it is), while conveniently ignoring that their supreme leader has declared nuclear weapons antithetical to Shi’a Islam.
